that way's probably as good as any.

You can't limit parsing the entire document will be parsed into an input
tree before XSLT starts. However if you don't want deepoer nodes
processed, just don't apply templates to them.

If your template matching <xsl:template match="/pages/page/page">
doesn't call apply-templates then children of those nodes won't be
processed (unless you select them from elsewhere).
