It's always useful to see some sample input.... so guessing that your XML looks like this: <PHONE TYPE=" "> (some whitespace for the attribute value) then you need to modify your test to be: string(normalize-space(PHONE/@TYPE)) which gives the same result as just: normalize-space(PHONE/@TYPE) Have a look at: http://www.dpawson.co.uk/xsl/sect2/N7240.html#d10988e673 cheers andrew -- http://andrewjwelch.com
