it keeps element nodes (xslt doesn't deal with tags)  but you are not
copying the child nodes of SS you are copying the grouping key (which is
the string value of the element in this case)  I suspect that you want
select="."
or
select="node()"/>
(depending what you do want)

Incidentally  <xsl:for-each-group select="//SS" group-by="."> is
potentially expensive  searching teh document to arbitrary depth looking
for SS, if you know a more specific path to these elements it's probably
better to use it.
