DSSSL Design Question

Why isn't it possible to iterate through flow object specifications, ask
about flow object types, rearrange individual flow object specifications
(within a sosofo) and so forth? I find it hard to build some higher
level abstractions on top of DSSSL without these abilities. Admittedly,
I am doing non-typical things (complex web publishing) but I wonder if
more traditional publishers may run into the same problems as they try
to build "style libraries" and frameworks.
