My understanding is that yes, this is the _only_ difference between the
two. At least, that is how I treat the two.

I am in the practice, though, of using sosofo-append when there are no
characteristics to inherit. When writing programs using the SGML Flow
Object Classes, this habit prevents any of the standard flow object classes
being "mixed in" with the SGML flow object classes ... not that this should
hurt, though, because if the SGML Flow Object Classes had inherited
characteristics, then it would be crucial to have the sequence flow object
class supported. Actually, I haven't tried it, but I wonder if you might
even have problems using a sequence flow object with JADE's SGML back end
(ie. does the JADE SGML back end support the sequence flow object in the
flow object tree?).

But as you said ... that would be more philosophical musings, as I just use
sosofo-append when writing the SGML transforms.
