How about using an inline-space? (inline-space 12pt min: 10pt max: 14pt) See 12.5.4.2 of the standard. Another option is use a line-field flow object: (make line-field field-width: 12pt (empty-sosofo)) I expect that the difference would be in how they are treated for line-breaking purposes (if you are working in English, for example).
