The TeX backend does not have excellent table support yet (though I
hope it will soon). shading - it depends what you mean.

If I had to do your job today, I'd write free-standing converters to
plain text and to native LaTeX, and write a good LaTeX style
file. Personally, I use David Meggison's excellent SGMLSpm Perl
library, but any system would do it.

Why PostScript and not PDF?
