It is provable that anything that can be computed with an imperative 
language can be computed with a side-effect-free language, given the same 
input.

The basic idea is that you can always format the last page of a document
independently from the formatting of the first page.

As a comment on your solution: in general I will go to great lengths to 
allow Jade to do lookups and other processing because it is quite fast, 
and future improvements to Jade will improve my code "for free." That's 
why I use q-element, node-list-map and so forth so heavily.
