read-entity/sgml-parse and file access?

Good morning,

I'm experimenting with read-entity and sgml-parse and I have a
small problem. If I attempt either of these functions on a file
that doesn't exist, I get an error.  Is it possible to test for
the existance of the file first?  The document I'd like to read
might not exist (which for this application would be fine).
