Calling External Programmes

 Hi,
 
 I use Jade and DSSSL and I'd like to 
 
  - be able to call an external programme whenever I 
    find a particular tag,
  - pass the tag contents to the external programme, and
  - receive back (and output) the standard output from 
    the programme.
 
 so given an SGML file containing <M>some text</M>, I'd like to 
 pass "some text" to the programme, and receive "someother text 
 back".
 
 Any pointers would be appreciated.
