Look for a file dbparam.dsl in the print directory of the docbook
stylesheets (I assume you use norm's). There you can control the
margins...

I use MathMl for typing equations together with a stylesheet which
originally came from David Carlisle. But for my purposes I altered it a
little bit ;-))
See www.w3.org for the MathMl DTD. Ah yeah the docbook DTD has to be
changed to little extend to allow <math> in equation elements...

Want to see an example? Look at www.projekt-studium.de. I think the site
will soon be available  (warning: its german ;-)).
