In some circles, Book Sets are referred to as "titled series," as
opposed to the numbered series. But I like your terminology; so, to
avoid confusion, let's refer to multivolume sets as Book Sets.

The crux of the matter is this: what should be tagged as <source>: the
title of the entire Book Set or the title of an individual volume
within?

In the approach you are suggesting, the title of the individual volume
is tagged as <source> and the title of the entire set is tagged as
<series>. However, in the references, the title of an individual
volume in a Book Set is more often than not omitted entirely.

What concerns me is that in such cases the citation will have no <source>!!!

E.g.,
<mixed-citation publication-type="book" publication-format="print"> ...
in
<series>Cytokine reference: a compendium of cytokines and other
mediators of host defense</series>, Vol. <volume>2</volume>,

TITLE OF THE INDIVIDUAL VOLUME OMITTED

<publisher-loc>London</publisher-loc>:
<publisher-name>Academic Press</publisher-name>; <year>c2001</year>. p.
<fpage>1971</fpage>-<lpage>1980</lpage>.
</mixed-citation>

Then this will map to CrossRef schema as:

<series_title>Cytokine reference: a compendium of cytokines and other
mediators of host defense</series_title> ...
<volume>2</volume>

Note that there will not be <volume_title>.

So, if it is okay that the citation may not have <source> and the
resulting CrossRef deposit may not have <volume_title> then your
approach is fine but I wanted to make sure that this is the
recommended practice.

Thank you,
