Subject: [jats-list] BITS 1.0 released. Schemas and Documentation available - woohoo From: "Beck, Jeff (NIH/NLM/NCBI) [E]" <beck@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Date: Tue, 31 Dec 2013 21:19:01 +0000 |
Happy New Year! [Executive Summary: http://jats.nlm.nih.gov/extensions/bits/] The Book Interchange Tag Suite (BITS) version 1.0 contains an XML model for STM books that is based on the Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS; ANSI/NISO Z39-96-2012) version 1.1d1. This is a non-backward-compatible update the the BITS 0.2 DRAFT version that was released in October 2012. Suggestions and comments on that draft version were collected by the BITS Working Group. Some of these that were applicable to journal articles as well as books were fed back to the JATS Standing Committee and were incorporated into the JATS 1.1d1 release in early December 2013. Because BITS 1.0 is and extension of JATS 1.1d1, these changes are in the current model. Those suggestions that were specific to books only were incorporated directly into BITS 1.0. BITS 1.0 is not backward-compatible with the version 0.2 Draft. Some of the more significant changes from 0.2 are listed below: MathML upgraded from 2.0 to 3.0 (from JATS 1.1d1). <institution-id> element added to disambiguate organizations in affiliation and funding information (from JATS 1.1d1).
and <kwd-group> added to more objects in a book part (from JATS 1.1d1). @sort-key added to <index-entry> to help with index building especially from non-English content. @dtd-version removed from all elements except <book> and <book-part-wrapper>. <ruby> added as an emphasis element to handle inline textual annotations (from JATS 1.1d1). <book-volume> replaces <volume> in <book-meta>. Two new elements will be added to <collection-meta>, the volume number of this book in the collection (<volume-in-collection>) and the volume title of the book in the collection (<volume-title-in-collection>). A new parameter entity, %jats-common-atts;, was added to make it easier to define attributes on all elements in the model. As distributed it includes @xml:base and @id (from JATS 1.1d1). <xi:include> was added to allow modularization of BITS documents with XInclude. Question and Answer or Quiz model elements were added: <question>, <question-wrap>, <answer-set>, <answer>, and <explanation>. A complete Tag Library is available here: http://jats.nlm.nih.gov/extensions/bits/tag-library/1.0/ This schemas (DTD, XSD, RNG) and documentation are available by anonymous FTP: ftp://ftp.ncbi.nih.gov/pub/jats/extensions/bits/1.0/ Note: The W3C Schemas (xsd) files work with current versions of Saxon, but we are having an issue with the Xerces parser and MathML 3.0. Updates will be made on the JATS-List when they are available. Please send any suggestions to this list. Thank you and have a great new year. Jeff
