Ahh. Then I think <styled-content> is exactly what you want.

For example:

<p>This is a paragraph with a <styled-content style="background-color: grey"
    specific-use="highlight">few highlighted</styled-content> words. These
    <styled-content style="background-color: grey"
specific-use="highlight">special</styled-content>
    words appear in many places!</p>
