BITS 2.2 was published on September 30, 2025. It is now available on the JATS
site:
    https://jats.nlm.nih.gov/extensions/bits/2.2/

Structures were added to keep BITS aligned with JATS to preserve the ability
to make
JATS articles into BITS book-parts with minimal changes to content markup. For
example,
the JATS multi-language capability, introduced in JATS 1.4, was added.
