I suggest you look into context, see wiki.contextgarden.net (currently down).
Although it's based on TeX it can consume XML natively. I have no experience
using it with mathml, but that should be possible.
I typeset a journal in the humanities with it, see
https://judaica.ch<https://judaica.ch/> for example output.

Best,
Denis

Subject: [jats-list] Generating PDF from JATS+MathML

Hi all,

Does anyone out there have experience generating PDFs from JATS with MathML
using Linux tools?

We currently edit journal articles as instances of JATS in Arbortext Editor.
For years we've used the MathFlow plug-in for Arbortext to provide a GUI for
editing equations in MathML, but MathFlow is being replaced by a newer version
of MathType, and it appears that Arbortext with MathType won't support PDF
creation without an expensive upgrade to a different printing solution.

I need a PDF with plain formatting: it doesn't have to be as finely tuned as a
typeset journal page--just clean enough to serve as a reference for a
typesetter. Ideally I'd like to find Linux tools that will run on macOS and
RHEL for development and on RHEL in production. If you've been down this road
already, I'd love to hear from you.
