| Another question: What is the <DIV> tag for?

It's defined as a block-level semantic-less container, just like SPAN
is a semantic-less inline container. They're mainly intended to be
used with the CLASS attribute and stylesheets to provide HTML with
some level of extensibility. 

I guess you could call it poor man's XML, in a sense.
