value-of gives you the string value which is all the characters,
which is not what you want. so


    <xsl:apply-templates select="title" mode="title"/>

<xsl:template match="expansion" mode="title"/>

should work. The empty template for "expansion" in title mode says
you don't want expansions in titles.
