However if the number of characters you need isn't that large, as in my case, I decided doing it that way was dull and instead now do <xsl:variable name="x" select="'00000000000000000000000000000000000000'"/> .... <xsl:value-of select="substring($x,1,2)"/> > For this particular case, the text must be only two characters.
