If you are using Oracle and you are not afraid of writing some tricky queries, you can get hierarchical XML out of SQL using some proprietary ( not obvious ) Oracle tricks with cursor. If you want something simple and obvious running with any SQL server, you can take a look at http://www.pault.com/Pxsl.
