Did you try
xsl:for-each select="LogEvent[*[name()=$selColumn]=$filter]">
If you need different numbers of terms e.g.
<xsl:variable name="filterExpr">
<xsl:for-each $params>
<xsl:call-template name="build-term">
</xsl:for-each>
</xsl:variable>
have a look at the saxon:evaluate function.
