I was trying to just copy the attribute name, so I could give it a new value as an inelegant workaround for a problem that didn't actually need a workaround. It has since been pointed out to me that xsl:attribute the way to do this. I had been put off by the error messages received when I had been mistakenly using a variable in the name attribute of xsl:attribute *without* the curly quotes.
