<xsl:for-each select="$topschemafile/schema"> that would find all elements with local name schema and no namespace that are in the file, but you want to find all the elements called schema in the schema namespace so you want <xsl:for-each select="$topschemafile/x:schema"> where x: is the prefix bound to the schema namespace in your stylesheet.
