Pass the param value as a node in the source tree.
Extract it in the XSL
xmlis
<root>
<myval>26</myval>
</root>

xslis
<xsl:param name='myvariable'><xsl:select
value-of="//myval"/></xsl:param>

then use as $myvariable which will be replaced with 26
can't rememeber if you need to use {} or not or the $
or not, have a go anyhowslike
