Try <xsl:variable name="APOS">'</xsl:variable> <xsl:if test="contains($string, $APOS)"> Matt I also tried it like this: <xsl:if test="contains($string, ')"> and <xsl:if test="contains($string, ''')"> but got exceptions like the one above.
