Thanks to the many people who replied pointing out the way to divide the task between selection and enumeration. I was so hung up on the idea that it could be done in a single statement I hadn't spotted that.

Getting the title is easy. What's important from an automation point of view (remember I am dealing with authors in the Humanities, not computer scientists) is that a reference produces the name of the class of object referenced (eg See <ref to="foo"/> where foo is the ID of a figure should produce See Figure 27. Fortunately this is also not difficult.
