that I would like to shorten up: select="key('MyKey',concat('1','alpha'))/parent::*"> well, '1alpha' is shorter than concat('1','alpha') but maybe in your real cases it's not quite like that. /.. is shorter than parent::* depending a bit om what your general case is like you may be able to put the parent rather than the child in the key, so that you don't need to go up at all.
