Yes, the variable $node gets set with: > <xsl:variable name="node" select="node[@order = $from]" /> This gets the node element child of the current element (whatever the current element was when the template was originally called) whose order attribute equals the value of the $from parameter that's been passed into the template. So a different node each time the template is called (recursively). If there isn't a node whose order attribute is equal to the $from parameter, then the $node variable is an empty set.
