People unfamiliar with string manipulation conventions would assume that
'leading and trailing' means one thing (coming before or after something
else), while other people would assume it means something different (that
it is synonymous with 'starting and ending' or 'only'). I'd say using 
terminology that can be interpreted in different ways is an exercise in
ambiguity. :)
