yes split on 126 as you had it then before you put out the br
output the first bit and put the rest in a variable (say $x) then 
<xsl:when test="contains($x,' ')">
  <xsl:value-of select="substring-before($x,' ')"/>
  <br/>
  <xsl:call-template...
   .. do something with 
        <xsl:value-of select="substring-after($x,' ')"/>
</xsl:when>
<xsl:otherwise>
  <br/>
  <xsl:call-template...
   .. do something with 
        <xsl:value-of select="$x"/>
</xsl:otherwise>
