it's quite common to use (//*) which is a short form of descendent::*
as opposed to //* which is descendent-or-self::node()/*
as given it selects th on-loan attribute from the first element in the
document. 
without the parens it would select the on-loan attribute from every
element that was the first element child of its parent.
