<xsl:when test="_literal_ = '*'"> ... </xsl:when> <xsl:when test="_literal_ = '/'"> ... </xsl:when> <xsl:when test="not(_literal_)"> ... </xsl:when> by the way it is not different forms of a tag, it's different forms of an element (or element content) the tag is the same in each case :<term> XSLT can not see th etags at all, which are just part of the markup in te hfile, not part of the tree that XSL sees.
