[xsl] debugging XSLT

Whilst I see some are discussing "object oriented XSLT" and similar
advanced enhancements to the language, I am still struggling very much
with the basics of the available tools.

May I ask what the preferred XSLT debugging tool or approach is, other
than trial and error?
