this is a faq.

The white space is in your stylesheet here:

    </xsl:if>
       This question has <xsl:value-of select="@answer-count"/> correct 
answer<xsl:if test="@answer-

white space in the stylesheet is only stripped if it is part of a white
space text node, ie th enode only contains white space. Your text node
has white space and characters, so it is all preserved.



    </xsl:if>
       <xsl:text/>This question has 

if you did that then the white space would be in a different text node
and so stripped.
