I think the confusion (for me) is that d-o-e defaults to "yes" for <xsl:text/> and "no" for <xsl:value-of/>.
That's news to me. I always write my style sheets as if d-o-e always defaults to "no", and they happen to work. What's the source of your wisdom?
I don't see why the output method should be relevant in this case either.
