Mmm. Its the embedding within <xsl:text> that I missed.

Actually, not quite ... it is the use of the character entities that was critically important. They aren't bare linefeeds or end-of-line sequences.


I could have used:

<!ENTITY nl "<xsl:text>&#xd;&#xa;</xsl:text>">

.. but then I lose the flexibility to do:

<xsl:text>Line 1&nl;Line 2&nl;Line 3&nl;&nl;</xsl:text>

I was only passing on what my own practice was in this area. I wanted the flexibility by not having included any XSLT in the entity.
