Have you looked at the document() function?

<xsl:template match="*">
   <!-- Load second document into a variable -->
   <xsl:variable name="doc2" select="document('d:\foo.xml')" />

   <xsl:if test="./@name=$doc2/bar/@name">
       .. whatever
   </xsl:if>
</xsl:template>

   <xsl:if test="./@name=.(other_file)/@name">
   <xsl:text>Attribute name is indentical in both xml files</xsl:text>
   </xsl:if>
</xsl:template>

Best regards
Johan
