[xsl] table sort

Subject: [xsl] table sort

Given a simple table like the one below,
I need to copy it, with the content sorted by the first entry.

I *thought* it should work using an identity stylesheet,

with

<xsl:template match="tbody">
  <tbody>
   <xsl:apply-templates>
    <xsl:sort select="row/entry[1]/para"/>
   </xsl:apply-templates>
  </tbody>
</xsl:template>

but it only works with
   <xsl:sort/>

I.e. taking the default, the content of the current node,
which in this case is what I want (plus a bit).
  Why can't the sort key be further down the tree?

I really don't understand why.
Can anyone offer enlightenment please.

regards DaveP

     <para>content A</para>
    </entry>
    <entry />
   </row>
   <row>

    <entry>
     <para>content X</para>
    </entry>
    <entry />
   </row>
   <row>
    <entry>
     <para>C</para>
    </entry>
    <entry>
     <para>content C</para>
    </entry>
    <entry />
   </row>
   <row>
    <entry>
     <para>D</para>
    </entry>
    <entry>
     <para>Content D</para>
    </entry>
    <entry />
   </row>

  </tbody>
  </tgroup>
  </table>
