I was going by the dependencies listed in the FreeBSD ports collection web site. FreeBSD generally lets people pick and choose what to install; many things that users of other OSes take for granted as being part of the base distribution are options (though often "typical install" components) under FreeBSD. Same with Cygwin. Since the ports are maintained by individuals, sometimes the dependencies are actually just the port maintainer's preferred configurations for ideal functionality, rather than the bare minimum requirements.
