Sorry.  I had no intention of sounding grumpy.  Terse, yes.  I thought to:
encourage some useful heuresis on the part of the poster; and direct him to a
resource he may not have been aware of.

In fact, I somewhere have a stylesheet which creates a fairly simple table which
achieves the poster's goal for one of the model numbers he mentions.  I thought
if he replied to the w3.org list with additional concerns I could post excerpts
of my solution there rather than spam this list with 250 lines of FO which may
or may not have been to the point.

It doesn't take a deal of math or absolute positioning to solve this problem and
it can be parameterized to handle multiple label layouts, although I didn't take
into account Mr. Holman's solution to wastage.
