Assuming that all your <A12> were supposed to read <A12/>, you appear to be counting elements and ignoring all other nodes, in which case the answer is count(//*). But from the way you phrase your question, you could probably do with reading the data model spec a bit more carefully and learning how the XSLT/XPath tree model works.
