I found that studying a bit of Scheme to learn recursive thinking helped HUGELY with XSLT - I recommend "The Little Schemer" which is a set of "exercises for the brain, like piano finger exercises".

coping with XSLT syntax is painful enough without also struggling to understand the semantics! --
