We have two threads running today along the lines

Q: I want to transform X to Y

A: here's the code

Q: But the input isn't always like X, it might be X', in which case I want
Y'

A: here's the code

Q: But what if the input is X"?

A: here's the code

This can go on for ever, and it's remarkable that people respond to these
questions. Even more remarkably, people sometimes guess correctly what the
real requirement is (we miss Jeni, but there are others who sometimes fill
her shoes). 

To specify a transformation, you need to know the range of possible inputs,
and rules to decide what the output should be in each case. One example
input and one example output simply isn't enough.
