Your for-each is working fine, but your XPath is wrong:

At 02:47 PM 4/1/2005, you wrote:

this value-of selects the "transaction_detail" element child of the root 
(as indicated by the initial slash). You want the "transaction_detail"

That's xsl:value-of select="transaction_detail"/>
