That's what you'd expect and want.
&#xE1; is a reference to an accented A. This is just surface syntax,
what is reported by the XML parser, so what XSLT sees as input is the
character not the reference to a character.
It's the same in PHP although there the syntax is different the
character reference uses \ syntax.
