Actually, it's version="1.0" (//rec_gear_sec/*)[$gearMid] is returning the very first child, even though $gearMid returns 34. What you're looking for is: (//rec_gear_sec/*)[$gearMid] I also, against my better judgement, found it tempting to disbelieve the spec about dynamic context sometimes until I realized how easy it is to manipulate sequences. sdc
