Instead I dynamically create, and immediately evaluate, expressions in xquery. I use the util:evaluate() function in eXist for that. Then I do not have to care about output escaping. I use that to create xqueries based on the contents of an xml file, using the xml as a query pattern. Then I can change the xml file, and execute a somewhat different xquery, without having to change the xquery code. Hans
