in 1.0 it's a result-tree-fragment (that acts like a root node) and in
2.0 it's a document node (the new name for a root node). So it's a
non-empty node set (in 1.0) or sequence (in 2.0) and so counts as true.
That's the
<xsl:if test="string-length($row-test) > 0">
test but when that's true you test for
> <xsl:when test="category">
which is looking for category children of the current category element.
