Well, it rather depends on what you want to do with the validation errors. If it's OK just to splat the messages on System.err, then the XSLT "script" (for once, the term seems reasonable) is probably OK. If you want to analyze them, use them to generate email to the originators of the document, do different things with valid and invalid documents, etc, then it probably makes more sense to write a Java application.
