we've been through a few iterations (and both getting old)

which is the correct utf8 for the character follwed by the utf8 for
VARIATION SELECTOR 1
Without seeing any other evidence, the most likely reason for this
character being added is that your stylesheet (or DTD) is adding it:-)

Can you post a 2 line input doc with a six line stylesheet that shows
this effect?

Are you sure you are not
a) using an old version of the dtd and
b) using srarr rather than rarr in the initial stix proposal
shortrightarrow was shorter than rarrow (which is itself shorter than
longrightarrow) and some early drafts of the dtd tentatively assumed
that the variation selector would selectteh short variant in this case.
But that isn't how unicode ended up being defined and so later versions
of the dtd make srarr and rarr synonyms, both pointing at 2192.
